When this video came out last month I literally watched it over and over again. Then the other day I rediscovered it and watched it some more. Then, just now I rediscovered it and I had to share. Because this has literally been my latest/reoccurring obsession.
Just can't get over this guy. I haven't been able to stop listening to his stuff since the first moment I heard it. I am a huge fan of the oldies already, but his soul-infused records that sound like they came right out of the late 60's make Mayer Hawthorne my lastest obsession.
There hasn't really been any exciting things happening in my life lately to be honest, but I have become very much so obsessed with music again. I spend a lot of time with my head phones in as I walk to school, study, take naps in the library, etc. I kinda feel like it gets me through my day. There is just something about good music that releases tension and stress and makes me forget about all the deadlines, classes, and exams that fill my day. Spotify has literally become my best friend. Any free time that I have I am searching for new music, or playing my favorites. I have known about Birdy for a while now, but I hadn't really look much into her music beside her cover of Bon Iver's Skinny Love (which is way good by the way). I am really impressed by the fact that she is only like 15 years old and has that voice. Also, the fact that she does such amazing covers of some of my favorite songs. Her album covers artists like Phoenix (who I am hoping to see in concert this summer), Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and the Postal Service amongst others. Don't get me wrong. I am a huge fan of the original songs, but I feel like a good cover compliments the original so much.

It has been a little while since I last shared a song, so when this song came on my Spotify playlist I was just so happy. Spotify is like the best thing in my life right now since I can't afford to buy music these days. My roommates will make fun of me for saying this... but I don't listen to a lot of mainstream music on my own, but living in a college town has forced me to listen to all the songs on the radio. I seriously wasn't aware of Gangnam style until September when I moved here. I feel like that's quite an accomplishment! Now, I don't think that mainstream music is necessarily bad, I just don't really get out of it what I get out of other music. It's as simple as an opinion. With that being said, I LOVE it when musicians experiment with different genres. Basically I think this song is one the best things ever. Thank you Bird and the Bee for your sick ghetto beat...
I know that it has been a couple weeks since I have done a Record Tuesday post. Every time a Tuesday would roll around I would get sad because I knew that I didn't have time to do one. Here's a little taste of what I've been listening to lately. Everyday when I ride my bike to and from school I listen to these guys. So good.
I know that I shared a Fleet Foxes song a couple weeks ago... but the truth is that I am still listening to them. I have been for about a month now, I can't stop. I have tried to listen to something else, but I keep coming back. What can I say? I guess I could tell you that the weather here has been so nice and that Fleet Foxes are my nice weather music. Like today for instance, I am sitting in the grass in a courtyard on campus doing my homework and listening to this song. I was free of the stress that comes with deadlines, tests, and lack of sleep. I just felt really happy to be where I was sitting in the sun, even if I was doing economics homework. If I keep sharing Fleet Foxes songs... I am sorry, but I feel bad sharing anything that isn't inspiring me at the moment. I just hope I don't over play them...
I love Coldplay. I love this song. Shh... don't tell Tabby this... but I am going to play this song at her "Yellow Party" coming up. (Tabby don't you dare read this.) Anyways, I am trying to learn new songs to play on my guitar and sing and this is one of them. I don't know why I had never thought of playing it before. It's just so good.

P.S. What do you think about myself recording me playing music and sharing it with you guys here? I always thought it was a little weird when people did that but now I think it would be good for me to get out there and play for people (even virtually). Maybe it will help me get better? The other day I was talking to a group of people, who live in my apartment complex, about music. They asked me who my favorite musician is. Of course, I had no idea what to say. I love a large variety of music, and couldn't give an "all time favorite". When people ask me that question I usually just say something to the effect of "Well I have been listening to a lot of (insert band name here) lately." and a lot of the times no one knows what band I am talking about. Which is ok, because a lot of times I don't expect people to, because I don't listen to a lot of mainstream music. So this group of people that I am talking to asks me what my favorite musician is and I say "Um... I don't know..." This girl starts naming musicians like Katy Perry, Beyonce, T-Pain, etc. She was baffled that I didn't really care for them. Then this guy says I bet you like (insert band I have never hear of). I say that "I have never heard of them", and once again they are baffled. Then this one guy says "No she likes good stuff." I say "I do like good stuff." He says "I bet you like Vampire Weekend." I then say "You happen to be correct".
Long story short... that is the moment when I realized that I hadn't listened to Vampire Weekend in way too long, and also that it makes me sad that people don't know who they are. So kudos to that one guy that knew.
Also, this is my favorite Vampire Weekend song. I love the classical music elements mixed with the electronic. So good.

I don't know what it is... but I have listened to nothing but Fleet Foxes for the past week. They are just too good. I don't know if it's the mountains and tall trees that surround me on my long walks to school or what. I just put on my headphones and turn the volume up.
The harmonies in this song literally give me goosebumps. Literally. So amazing.
I love this song. A lot. I know I have been talking about this a lot... but since I left Texas I have been reminiscing my summer. At our last bonfire someone played this song on the guitar and we all sang along and harmonized. As we sat there singing I looked up and saw a meteor. Basically, it was a really beautiful and tender moment for me. I miss those Texas friends of mine...
The Kooks are one of those bands that you either love or hate. I love them. A lot. The other day when I was at the beach I was singing this song in my head. It basically is the theme song of that day.

This has to be one of my favorite Shins song. It's just too good. I think I have shared this song before actually... but lets face it... it's good enough for a double share. Also, if you like The Shins you will like Broken Bells. Its a James Mercer (Shins lead singer) and Brian Burton (Danger Mouse) duo. I love it when awesome musicians do side projects.
Today was a lazy day. I pretty much nothing but be a couch potato. It was nice. I have been listening to this song over and over lately partly because it is way good, but mostly because there's a bonfire coming up that I learning to play new music for. I guess I take requests now?
Since tomorrow is Independence Day I wanted to share some music from a band that I consider all-American. The first band I thought of was the good ole Beach Boys. I am a big big fan. Every song sounds like summer, feels like summer, and makes you want it to be summer. I often listen to the Beach Boys on my drive to the beach, and during the winter I'll listen to them when I am feeling particularly depressed and cold from the lack of sunshine. I am also really mad about the fact that their reunion tour is going to Utah, and I am stuck in Texas.

This may sound strange... this song is my "feel something" song. I really don't know how to explain it. Other than, it's like those movies when someone is riding in a car and they lean their head up against the window and this beautifully somber music plays and you know what they are "feeling". Whether it be happiness, sadness, joy, love, pain, whatever. This song makes me feel like that. Does anyone know what I mean? If so, what song is your "feel something" song? I'd love to hear it. Maybe i'll "feel something" too.

Child is my favorite song from the record, but Man On Fire comes in a pretty close second.
Last week my bestie Andy was in town and gave me the new Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (ESMZ) record. I am a big fan of this record and their first "Up From Bellow". I think every one is familiar with their song "Home". Last summer I had the chance to see them in concert at a park in Salt Lake for FREE! They are incredible live! Alex (pictured above) looked pretty similar to a hobo might look. My friends were upset by that, but I didn't care. He sounded amazing! Since the concert was outside we sat on a blanket on the grass and just listened. I kinda felt like I was at Woodstock, but not really... You know how when your at concerts and it's really crowded and your tired of standing but you still really want to see the concert? And you wish that there was a way for you to sit on a bench that floats above the crowd and right in front of the band? The perfect seat. Well at the concert there was this tree in the middle of the crowd and a guy climbed up the tree and sat there and had the perfect seat! Alex would point to him and basically serenade this one guy in a tree! I was incredibly jealous.

This song is one of my all time favorite songs. Not just because it's way good. But it's sentimental. Basically this song reminds me of the good ole days when my besties Kait, Andy, Courtney, and I were all here in Texas dreaming, picnicking, beaching, dancing, eating, talking, sleeping, crafting, adventuring... together. This is one of our songs. Yesterday I talked with Kaity and tomorrow I am hanging out with Andy (who's in town!) I can't wait for us to all be together again. Isn't it funny how you crave the future and getting away from home and doing something then when you finally get there all you want is to be back where you were before with those people who mean the world to you.
Also. I had this dream of becoming a musician. I have since given up on that dream, partly because I have new dreams now. Well I haven't exactly given up on it... you know what I mean... It's not an active dream anymore. It's more like a hobby. I started recording music on my little macbook three years ago for fun. My recordings weren't that good because I didn't have a mic, so I just used the internal microphone on my laptop. Basically my recordings are the epitome of crappy, but I still love them. So a couple years ago Courtney and I decided to do a recording of this song for Kaitlyn's birthday. You can have a listen if you'd like.

Last summer my bestie Kaitlyn and I road tripped from Utah to Texas and along the way we shared and talked a lot about music. She introduced me to this guy, and his music has been a favorite ever since. Enjoy.
Since last week I posted Record Tuesday at like 1:30 AM on Wednesday morning I thought that this time it might be nice to do it at like 1:30 AM on Tuesday morning even though I have yet to go to sleep.
